Action Against Hunger-USA is part of the Action Against Hunger International network, which provides humanitarian relief in over 40 countries worldwide in the sectors of nutrition, health, water/sanitation, and food security. Action Against Hunger-USA, an independent NGO, currently manages operations in 7 countries: Ethiopia, Haiti, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. Action Against Hunger-USA has over $55 million in programs and approximately 1,600 permanent staff based in New York City, Washington D.C., Nairobi, and country offices. Additional growth is anticipated.

Action Against Hunger currently has a hybrid work policy that requires at least two days in the office per week and proof of COVID-19 vaccination. The organization has offices in New York City and Washington, DC.

Job Summary

The Human Resource Associate will provide specialized support to the department. The role will work with employees throughout the organization, as well as with HR tools, databases, employee files, and organization charts. This role will assist with recruitment, training and onboarding, scheduling, and answering staff inquiries.

Purpose: To provide the HR team with confidential support specifically focused on the HR areas of specialization, including recruiting, onboarding, and HR systems. The HR Associate will be the lead on the management of HR files within Action Against Hunger’s internal HR files systems, scheduling, and being the face of HR for the department with excellent customer service skills dealing with all levels of staff in the organization.

Engagement: The HR Associate works with all levels of employees within the organization as well as potential employees, employment agencies, external partners, and consultants who work with HR on projects for Action Against Hunger.

Delivery: The successful candidate will work well with all levels of employees within the organization, as well as outside candidates, vendors, and the general public.

Essential Job Duties

Recruitment

Takes the lead on creating share point files in our HR systems, scheduling regular onboarding sessions, preparing and maintaining employee files, assisting with job postings, preparing offer letters and other sensitive documents, sending new hire information out to those who participate in the onboarding process and ensure new hires have desks, computers, and the onboarding packet of information.

HR Information Systems

The HR Associate will be responsible for maintaining our internal HR system, which will include creating new hires, terminations, and other necessary changes or updates such as department changes, supervisor changes, and title changes. This role is also responsible for setting up regular monthly minute conversation reminders and works with the Associate Director of People & Strategy to assist in the annual performance review process.

Coordination

The HR Associate will prepare correspondence, respond to internal and external inquiries, schedule meetings, run reports in the HR System and Excel, coordinate with payroll, audit HR files, and update organizational charts

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit for long periods and to concentrate on work, including typing, and turn out heavy volumes of work accurately within short time frames under stressful situations in the context of a moderately noisy office with interruptions.

Working Conditions, Travel and Environment

  • The duties of the job require regular job attendance at least five days per week. Must be available to work outside normal office hours or on the weekends as required by contact with the missions, mission security, or other obligations.
  • Must be able to travel as required for standard domestic and international business travel as well as to the missions if appropriate. While visiting the field, the employee may be exposed to precarious settings under high security risks and/or very basic living conditions and outside weather conditions, as well as to infectious diseases.

Do you meet the profile required criteria?

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degrees and 2 plus years or equivalent experience in human resource management business management. Non-profit humanitarian organization experience is a plus as well.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Knowledge and practical experience of human resources theory, rules and regulations
  • Exceptional communication and writing skills with the ability to interact tactfully and effectively
  • A passion for excellence and a desire to contribute to the growth of the organization
  • Expert user of MS Office Suite, SharePoint, and HRIS systems; comfortable working with computers with minimal IT support
  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrable attention to detail
  • Proactive individual who has a high level of integrity
  • Ability to take initiative, prioritize, and multiple tasks with minimal supervision
  • Experience working in an environment which requires a high level of flexibility
  • Genuine interest in and commitment to the humanitarian principles of Action Against Hunger
  • Must be authorized to work in the US if not a US citizen

Gross annual starting salary : $60,000-$65,000
